How it works

The software reads the X-ray, calculates the measurements, and passes them to the clinician — in seconds.

Steps

  1. A child with CP has a routine hip X-ray as part of their care.
  2. The X-ray is passed to the software. All identifying details have been removed.
  3. The software analyses the image and calculates the key measurements automatically.
  4. The result is shown back to the clinician, who checks it and adjusts if needed.
  5. The confirmed measurements are automatically recorded in the national CPIP database.
  6. Results can be compared with previous X-rays over time, making it easier to spot changes.

What is the migration percentage?

The main measurement used when assessing hip X-rays in children with CP is called the migration percentage — a number that shows how far the hip has moved out of its socket. A higher number means the hip has moved further. Clinicians use this number, alongside other measurements, to decide whether treatment is needed.

Families told us they want to see their child's results clearly - a bit like a growth chart - so they can understand how things are changing over time. This is something we are actively working on.

Accuracy

The software has so far been tested on over 1,650 hip X-rays from children affected by CP and has been shown to perform as well as experienced clinical experts. The results were published in The Bone & Joint Journal in 2025. A clinician always reviews every result before it is used.
